What Account-Based Marketing Looks Like with a Small Team

Account-based marketing with a small team means concentrating limited time and budget on the organisations most likely to become valuable customers. It is not a complicated technology programme, and it certainly does not require hundreds of personalised campaigns.

At its best, ABM gives marketing and sales a shared view of where to focus, who matters inside each account and what would make a useful conversation.

Where should a small team begin with ABM?

Start with the accounts, not the channels. I would rather see a team agree on 20 credible target organisations than build an impressive campaign around a vague audience.

Sales brings knowledge of the market, existing relationships and commercial timing. Marketing brings customer insight, positioning, content and a consistent way to build interest. The target list should reflect both perspectives.

Does every account need a bespoke campaign?

No. This is where sensible tiering helps.

  • Tier one: a small number of high-value accounts receiving individual research, tailored messages and coordinated outreach.
  • Tier two: groups of accounts with similar priorities, addressed through sector-specific content and campaigns.
  • Tier three: a wider audience reached through useful, relevant marketing that supports future demand.

The tiers are not permanent labels. An account can move as its circumstances, engagement or commercial potential changes.

What content works in account-based marketing?

Useful content answers a question the buyer is already asking. It might be a short industry briefing, a practical checklist, a case study or an invitation to a focused discussion. It does not need to be a glossy 30-page report that took three months to produce.

Personalisation is often misunderstood. Adding a company name to an email is not insight. Showing that you understand the organisation’s situation, pressures and decision process is.

How do you measure ABM with limited resources?

Keep measurement close to the commercial objective. Track meaningful engagement from priority accounts, new relationships, meetings, opportunities and movement through the pipeline. Do not manufacture success from impressions alone.

ABM works for a small team when it creates discipline rather than additional complexity. Choose carefully, align with sales, say something useful and learn from the response. That is less glamorous than a giant martech stack, but far more likely to move an account forward.
