Video Killed The…

The new video creation app, Sora, has got me all sorts of worried. Deepfakes, false news, revenge porn … and so the list goes on. As a marketer and friend of ChatGPT4, I think it will be an incredible tool for small businesses and startups. For creatives and content makers, however, I’m not sure.

Naturally, my first consideration when festering about AI is its impact on my kids. My teenager spends plenty of time on TikTok and other video apps, each day. How she finds the time – what with school, tutoring, sports, a part-time casual job and friends – is beyond me. She recently told me that access to the internet helps educate her and allows her to make social arrangements and communicate with friends. Agree. But what about when the educational material is not real? Or it’s based on fact – let’s say a sloth hanging from a tree – but it’s just pixels arranged on a screen? And what if she falls out with a friend who then makes a mean and rather cutting-edge video about her? It’s all getting a bit weird and could get very dark…

We have to trust that the creators of this powerful tool really are thinking about the broader implications for humanity. OpenAI states they will be engaging policymakers, educators and artists around the world to understand their concerns and to identify positive use cases for this new technology. But note the disclaimer: despite extensive research and testing, we cannot predict all of the beneficial ways people will use our technology, nor all the ways people will abuse it.

On the flip side, and as a marketer, I can see this tool as transformative. Lots of businesses can make their own videos and project themselves professionally with little to no budget. But will this influx of video content, being spewed out across the web, really have cut through? Will there be so much of this stuff that we all despise it? Like plastic?

I am interested in where this will go. Watching War Games, Robocop and Terminator growing up, does me no favours, however. I’m always waiting for the Black Mirror moment. But let’s see where it takes us. I personally have faith in the developers and the tech – but I don’t think humanity is quite ready for it. Give us another 100 years. Maybe I’ll just watch this to calm myself down…
